City of Alexandria Offers Tax Forms on the Web

Alexandria has made the City's business personal property tax return forms available on the City website for use by local businesses. The forms, to be filed with the City on or before May 1, are available on the web as Adobe Acrobat documents and can be downloaded at ci.alexandria.va.us/city/formspg.html. A link to the forms is also available through the rolling banner on the City's homepage, ci.alexandria.va.us.

The web-based form was made available in an attempt to make accessing the forms and filing the returns more convenient for local businesses.

The City uses the information provided on the returns to assess the businesses personal property tax, which is due on Oct. 5 of each year. For those businesses that do not file their business personal property tax return by the May 1 due date, a ten percent late filing penalty will be added to the tax bill.

Business personal property taxes are one of the City's major sources of revenue and constituted $23 million of the City's general revenue for fiscal year 2002. The City recently mailed approximately 8,000 business personal property tax return forms to businesses with property in the City.

For more information on the City's business personal property tax return, contact the Business Tax Branch of the City's Finance Department at 703.838.4680.
***Correction on 2003 Business Personal Property Tax Returns Mailed to Business Owners***
The business personal property tax returns mailed to business owners incorrectly listed the penalty for late filing at 10%. In 2002, the City Council passed Ordinance 4245, which amended Sections 3-2-229 and 3-2-230 of the City Code to reduce the penalty for failure to comply by the due date from 10% to 5% of the tax or $10.00, whichever is greater. A late filing penalty may also not exceed the tax or $500 if the return was filed within 30 days of filing due date.
