ALEXANDRIA RESIDENTS REMINDED TO
RETURN FORM CERTIFYING USE OF PERSONAL VEHICLES

As recently mandated for all counties, cities in towns by the Virginia General Assembly, the City mailed about 76,000 letters this week to vehicle owners in Alexandria to advise them they must certify to the City that their vehicle is for personal or business use. It is important that citizens respond to the letter to avoid losing the substantial state car tax reduction which provides 70% tax relief for most vehicle owners. Under this new state law, persons who fail to file a certification of personal use will be responsible for 100% of the car tax and no relief can be granted by the City.

Personal property tax reductions on vehicles for personal use are granted under the state's Personal Property Tax Relief Act of 1998. The recent changes to this act took effect Jan. 1 of this year. In order to be eligible for tax relief of up to 70% on the first $20,000 value, a vehicle must be owned by an individual, or leased by an individual who is responsible for the personal property taxes under the terms of the lease agreement.

The Alexandria Personal Property Tax Notice and Certification Form is requested to be completed and returned to the City's Department of Finance by March 17. Because the City wishes to have as many of its citizens who are eligible for this tax relief to receive it, a reminder mailing will be mailed out later in the spring for those who fail to file by March 17.

For more information, contact the City's Personal Property Tax Branch of the Department of Finance, City Hall Room 1410 or call 703.383.4560.
