Alexandria Health Department Hosts First Public Health Fair

The Alexandria Health Department, in celebration of National Public Health Week, April 7-13, is hosting its 1st Annual Public Health Fair, on Saturday, April 5, from 10 am to 2 pm, at the Ellen Coolidge Burke Library, 4701 Kenmore Ave..

The overall theme for National Public Health Week is “Healthy People in Healthy Communities,” and will focus on the epidemic of overweight and obesity in the United States. National Public Health Week was established in 1995 as a way of recognizing the contribution of public health and prevention services to America’s well-being.

At this year’s inaugural fair, visitors will be able to talk with Health Department staff and learn about the services* their local health department offers, including:

Smallpox Q&A and Emergency Preparedness
West Nile Virus
Prenatal & Child Health Services
Nutrition & Cardiovascular Health
“Partners in Prevention”
Teen Pregnancy Prevention
Dental Health
Community and Environmental Health Assessments
Preview of the new King Street Health Department facility
Children’s Activities, and much more…

(* Please note that this is an informational fair only; no health screening services will be provided.)

“This is a wonderful way to remind people of the important role public health plays in protecting and promoting the health of the citizens of Alexandria,” says Charles Konigsberg, Jr., M.D., M.P.H., District Health Director. “Encouraging healthy behaviors among all age groups and ensuring the quality and accessibility of health care services are just two areas where we focus a great deal of attention.”
