Alexandria Operates New Hybrid Cars

The City of Alexandria’s motor pool, which provides employees with vehicles for work-related activities, has recently added two new Toyota Prius hybrid cars to its fleet of automobiles.

The new cars use advanced engineering to combine a gas engine with an electric motor to create and environmentally advanced, fuel-efficient, hybrid. The hybrid cars run on regular gasoline and never need to be plugged in for recharging. Once the electricity in the batteries gets low, the gasoline engine takes over and begins to recharge the batteries.

“The hybrid cars were chosen for their environmental and fiscal benefits to the City,”said Edward Mandley, Director of General Services.

2002 EPA estimated that the Prius gets 52 city / 45 highway/ 48 combined miles per gallon and receives 566 miles to the tank. The Toyota Prius also received a Super Ultra Low Emission rating that’s up to 90 percent cleaner for smog-forming emissions than an Ultra Low Emission Vehicle.

The new cars will go into service next week, after representatives from Tyson’s Toyota educate City employees on the new technology.
