Alexandria Participates in Regional Emergency Preparedness Guide

As part of a cooperative effort sponsored by the Northern Virginia Regional Commission, Alexandria residents will soon receive copies of the 2003 Northern Virginia Guide to Emergency Preparedness either by mail or as an insert in the Sunday Washington Post advertising packet.

Residents who do not subscribe to the Post will receive the guide by mail on Friday, Feb. 14; subscribers who get the newspaper delivered to their homes will receive the guide as part of the advertising packet on Saturday, Feb. 15 or Sunday, Feb. 16. The color-printed wrapping of the packet will clearly indicate that the Emergency Guide is enclosed.

“When the federal government raised the national terror threat level to ‘High’ last week, the need increased for emergency preparedness information and resources,” said Phil Sunderland, Alexandria City Manager. “While the federal government sets threat levels, people look to local government for guidance and support. The new Northern Virginia Guide to Emergency Preparedness is a valuable tool for planning what to do in case of an emergency and a resource when an emergency is imminent or has just occurred.”

The 16-page color publication provides residents, visitors, employers and employees with a comprehensive guide for preparing for emergencies. It includes tips on creating an emergency supply kit, making financial preparations, preparing for extended loss of power, and planning for the special needs of children and senior citizens.

The 2003 version of the Guide is now available online at the City’s website http://ci.alexandria.va.us. . In addition to Alexandria, the local governments that collaborated on the publication include: the cities of Fairfax, Falls Church, Manassas, and Manassas Park; the counties of Arlington, Fairfax, Fauquier, Loudoun, and Prince William; the towns of Dumfries, Herndon, Leesburg, Purcellville, and Vienna. Dominion Virginia Power, Fairfax County Water Authority and Washington Gas provided additional funding.
