Free Tax Assistance for Low-Income Alexandrians

Volunteers with tax preparation expertise are available to assist low income Alexandrians to complete federal and state income tax forms at the Alexandria Department of Human Services Center, 2525 Mount Vernon Ave. Assistance is available Saturday mornings, Feb. 8 through April 12 (except March 15), 9 am until noon, and every other Wednesday evening, Feb. 12 through April 9, from 6 until 8 pm.. Spanish-speaking volunteers are also available.

This no-cost program will particularly benefit low income working families. It allows them to keep their entire tax refund and helps them receive all the tax credits to which they are entitled through the Federal Earned Income Tax Credit and the Federal Child Tax Credit. People with income up to approximately $20,000 are eligible to receive help. Families are eligible with income up to approximately $30,000 or greater for larger families. Service is on a first come – first served basis. Those wanting help with their taxes must bring W-2 forms and other income records, and records or receipts for expenses for childcare, education, or other income. They must also provide the social security numbers or ITINs for all dependents and a copy of last year’s tax return, if possible. Volunteers can also prepare prior year’s tax returns for filing.

Community Tax Aid, Inc., an all-volunteer, not-for-profit organization of accountants and lawyers in the metropolitan Washington, D.C. area, provides expert help on Saturdays. The Homeless Income Tax Service, a Federal VITA program, assists on Wednesdays.
