Alexandria Police Arrest Teacher for Aggravated Sexual Battery;
ESL Teacher Charged with Victimizing Student

The Alexandria Police Department has arrested Samuel Colon, a 42-year-old Washington, D.C., man, for the sexual assault of a 13-year-old boy. Colon was working as an ESL teacher at Francis Hammond Middle School in Alexandria when the incident occurred. The victim was one of Colon’s students.

Detectives began investigating this case on January 13 after Child Protective Services received a report of possible abuse. Investigation revealed that the assault occurred between September 9, 2002, and January 8, 2003, at the school. Colon was first taken into custody by Metropolitan police at his home at 1800 R Street NW in the District on Saturday, January 18. He was charged by Alexandria police today with Aggravated Sexual Battery. He is being held without bond at the Alexandria jail.

Alexandria City Public Schools will be sending a letter home to parents of Hammond students to notify them of Colon’s arrest. Colon, who has been placed on administrative leave, has worked as an ESL teacher for ACPS since fall of 1995.

Anyone with information about this case is asked to call Detective Pat McGowan in the Criminal Investigations Section at 703.838.4711.

Special note: Because the victim is an immigrant and an ESL student, police are making a special appeal to the news organizations serving the immigrant communities to cover this story. Thank you for your cooperation.

Note: A photo of Samuel Colon will be sent via e-mail. It will also be posted on the City of Alexandria website (ci.alexandria.va.us) under “Press Releases.”
