| PIO - 094-02 JAMES T. GOWER APPOINTED ACTING FIRE CHIEF Alexandria City Manager Philip Sunderland appointed Deputy Chief James T. Gower as Acting Fire Chief effective Nov. 23. Chief Tom Hawkins, who was the Alexandria Fire Chief since 1993, left that position Nov. 22. Gower has been with the Alexandria Fire Department since April 1965. He was promoted to lieutenant in 1972, to captain in 1974, to battalion chief in 1980, and to deputy chief in 1994. He has served as battalion chief/training officer, battalion chief of administrative services, and deputy chief of fire operations (suppression). Gower was honored by the Alexandria Olympic Boys Club in 1978 for saving a woman’s life from choking while he was off duty. In 1977 he received the Alexandria Jaycees Award for the Outstanding Young Firefighter. Gower was awarded a Certificate of Valor from the Alexandria Chamber of Commerce Public Safety Awards Ceremony in recognition for his saving the life of a motorist in 1995. A search is underway for a new fire chief to manage the 281-member department. ## |
