FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE October 29, 2002 PIO - 087-02 City of Alexandria Receives Increase in National Flood Insurance Program’s Community Rating System Based on its five-year cycle application, the City of Alexandria has been increased to a Class 8 in the National Flood Insurance Program’s (NFIP) Community Rating System (CRS) by the Federal Emergency Management Agency. This increase means that NFIP policies issued or renewed in the City’s Special Flood Hazard Areas (SFHAs) beginning Oct. 1, 2002, will receive a 10 percent premium discount. Each increase in CRS Class brings higher flood insurance premium savings and brings Alexandria closer to being resistant to flood water disasters. The City’s increase in the CRS translates to flood insurance savings for City residents and businesses in the City’s Special Flood Hazard Areas (SFHAs). These savings are a tangible result of the voluntary activities the City of Alexandria has implemented to counter flooding, including securing and preserving 242 acres of open space within the SFHA, regular inspection and maintenance of the City’s drainage system by the Department of Transportation and Environmental Services, and the City’s flood zone outreach program. The City of Alexandria is the first community in Virginia to have continuous participation in the National Flood Insurance Program, since the Program’s inception in 1970, and is only the third jurisdiction in the state to earn a rating of 8. The City ’s NFIP Community Rating System project is coordinated by the Engineering Division of the City’s Department of Transportation and Environmental Services. For more information about the City’s CRS Class increase, contact City Engineer Emily Baker at 703.838.4327. # # # |
