Alexandria City Council Endorses Bond Referendums and Issuance
Bonds to Address Parks and Recreation, Higher Education, Transportation

The City of Alexandria City Council recently voted in support of resolutions endorsing bond referenda addressing issues of higher education and parks and recreation., as well as a the issuance of transportation bonds.

At the Council’s Sept. 24 meeting, it voted to support a resolution to endorse a general obligation parks and recreation facilities bond referendum. The 2002 Virginia General Assembly passed legislation to include a referendum on the Nov. 5, 2002, ballot to allow voters to decide if the State should issue $119 million in general obligation bonds to provide funding for parks and recreation facilities throughout Virginia. Projects include purchasing land for three new state parks, 11 existing parks, 10 new natural area preserves and eight existing preserves, as well as funding for construction and improvement projects throughout Virginia’s 34 state parks. Included on the list of projects to be funded are capitol improvements at Mason Neck and Leesylvania State Parks in Northern Virginia.

At its Sept. 10 meeting, City Council voted to support a resolution to endorse a general obligation higher education bond referendum. The 2002 Virginia General Assembly passed legislation to include on the Nov. 5, 2002, ballot to allow voters to decide if the State should issue $900.5 million in general obligation bonds to provide funding for construction and renovation projects at Virginia’s colleges and universities ($845.9 million) and State-supported museums and cultural agencies ($54.6 million). George Mason University if slated to receive $35 million in funding, including $15.9 million for the Alexandria campus of Northern Virginia Community College.

Also at the Sept. 10 meeting, City Council voted to support a resolution to the Virginia Department of Transportation (VDOT) endorsing the issuance of Northern Virginia Transportation District Bonds. The bonds, to be issued this fall, would fund projects in Fairfax, Loudon, and Prince William counties. New projects authorized by this resolution include improvements to the Fairfax County Parkway, Route 28 in Loudoun County, the Occoquan River Bridge over Route 123 , and Metrorail capital improvements attributable to Fairfax County.
