Security Enhanced in Alexandria City Hall

As part of the City’s ongoing efforts to increase security measures in Alexandria City government buildings, access to City Hall, 301 King St., will be limited.

Beginning Monday, Oct. 7, the Fairfax Street doors will be permanently closed as an entrance to City Hall; they can still be used as an exit. After 6 pm Monday through Friday and on weekends when City Hall is open, the only entrances to City Hall will be through the center door on Market Square (behind the stage) and the handicapped entrance doors on the west side of Market Square. Persons exiting City Hall after 6 pm will still be able to use any of the doors.

City Manager Philip Sunderland explained that decisions to limit access to City Hall are based on the recommendations of an internal Safety and Security Committee chaired by Fire Chief Thomas Hawkins. The limitations are designed to increase the after-hour security of those using City Hall, while maintaining both reasonable access to the building and the feeling of “open government”. Another security enhancement is that all City employees are now wearing photo IDs issued by the City. Additional security and safety enhancements are being considered.
