Alexandria Police Investigate a Fatal Motor Vehicle Accident

The Alexandria Police Department is investigating a fatal motor vehicle accident which occurred this afternoon at 4:23 p.m.

The victim, Katrina Jeanetta Jones, a 30-year-old female City resident, had just picked up her 11-year-old daughter at a nearby junior high school, when she lost control of her vehicle and crashed into a wooden retaining wall in the 1300 block of North Pickett Street. As a result of the initial crash, the vehicle rolled over and came to rest in a wooded area at the dead end of North Pickett Street.

Investigation revealed that the victim motorist was driving a silver 2001 Hyundai four-door sedan, traveling southbound on North Pickett Street. The vehicle accelerated at a high rate of speed and was weaving in the roadway prior to impact. It is believed that the victim driver suffered a medical emergency and lost control of her vehicle. The 30-year-old victim, who sustained head trauma as a result of the accident, was transported to Inova Alexandria Hospital where she was pronounced dead at 5:22 p.m. Her daughter was transported to Inova Fairfax Hospital, where she is currently being treated for her non-life threatening injuries.

The Accident Reconstruction Team responded to the scene and began their investigation. The exact cause of death and the circumstances surrounding the accident are still under investigation. For further details, please contact the Public Information Office.
