City of Alexandria to Hold Dedication of Captain Rocky Versace Plaza and Vietnam Veteran’s Memorial

The City of Alexandria will hold a Dedication of the Captain Rocky Versace Plaza and Vietnam Veterans Memorial on Saturday, July 6 beginning at 10:30 am at the Mount Vernon Recreation Center, 2701 Commonwealth Avenue.

The dedication, which is open to the public, includes speakers Lt. Governor Timothy Kaine, Mayor Kerry Donley, members of City Council and keynote speaker Brigadier General (Ret.) Peter M. Dawkins. The event will center around the unveiling of a memorial sculpture, created by artist Antonio Tobias Mendez.

The Captain Rocky Versace Plaza and Vietnam Veteran’s Memorial was named after Capt. Humbert Roque “Rocky” Versace, who was executed by the Viet Cong in September 1965 following two years of captivity and stubborn refusal to compromise U.S. military information. The memorial honors Captain Rocky Versace and all Alexandria Military personnel who lost their lives in the Vietnam War.
