ANKAR Seeks Caring Aid for Summer Youth Camp
Great Opportunity to Teach Youth Understanding and Togetherness

The Alexandria Neighborhood Kids Program (ANKAR) is looking for donations and volunteers to assist with summer camps for Alexandria children.

ANKAR is a non-profit, community based youth service program designed to prevent the likelihood of Alexandria City children ages 12-15 from becoming involved in unproductive, self-destructive, or anti-social activities or behavior. The camps help children learn about understanding and togetherness.

ANKAR began as Alexandria’s Camp Getaway and Angels Camp in 1993 and 1994. The Alexandria Police Department, the 18th District Court Service Unit, and the Honorable Stephen Rideout, Chief Justice of the Alexandria Juvenile and Domestic Relations District Court, designed the educational and recreational camps to foster togetherness, fairness and understanding of cultural diversity issues amongst youth.

ANKAR is supported solely through local fund raising efforts and donations. The program encourages interested citizens to donate their time as camp counselors to help make a difference in the lives of Alexandria youth. For those interested, please contact Ronald Lemley, Supervisor of Probation for the Court Services at 703.838.4144.

The camp is also in need of school supplies including: book bags, pens, pencils, notebooks (including spiral), rulers paper, dividers, calculators, highlighters, and journals for males and females. Other donations needed include: glue for arts and crafts, Polaroid film, toothpaste, soaps, anti-perspirant, travel-size lotion, bug bombs for cabins and bathrooms, two-way radios and AA batteries. Donated items can be dropped off in City Hall, 301 King Street, Monday through Friday 8 am to 5 pm with the following: Marlo Wilson, Planning and Zoning (Room 2100) 703.838.3866 ext. 318; and Vanetta Pledger, Information Technology Services (Room 3200) 703.838.6333 ext. 555. Please deliver donations by July 26, 2002.

ANKAR also accepts tax-deductible monetary contributions all year. Checks can be made out to ANKAR, and sent to Alexandria City Police Officer Belinda Callahan, 2003 Mill Road; Alexandria, VA 22314.
