ALEXANDRIA HOMES LOSE WATER AND SANITARY SEWER SERVICE

The City of Alexandria is responding to an interruption in water and sanitary sewer service to least 16 homes in the 600 block of S. Payne Street following breaks this afternoon in a 6-inch water line and a 12-inch sanitary sewer line. About 3:30 pm today (June 10) City officials were notified by Shirley Contracting that, during construction of the Potomac Yard trunk sewer, a water main was ruptured in the 600 block of S. Payne Street between Gibbon and Franklin Streets.

According to the Virginia American Water Company, 16 homes are initially affected by the water main break. Currently neither water nor sanitary sewer service is available to the 600 block of S. Payne Street. City officials are conducting a home by home assessment to determine which units can be safely occupied. The contractor has offered hotel accommodations to the approximately 21 residents affected in the incident, including a disabled a resident, as well as kenneling for three dogs.

Much of the roadway in the 600 block of S. Payne Street has been damaged. The 600 block, which was already closed for the boring project, remains closed to traffic.

City officials from Transportation and Environmental Services, Code Enforcement, and Police are responding. Officials are working to restore water service by midnight. The extent of the damage to the sanitary sewer line and schedule for resumption of sanitary sewer service in the 600 block of S. Payne Street is unknown.
