Alexandria Police Launch “Operation Safe Summer”
Officers to Heavily Target Drunk Drivers for Three Consecutive Weekends
Starting this weekend, Alexandria police will begin Operation Safe Summer, an intensive DWI enforcement effort. For three consecutive weekends, police will increase DWI enforcement, both through checkpoints and mobile patrols. The objectives of this initiative are to deter motorists from driving under the influence of alcohol, and to identity and arrest those motorists who are driving while intoxicated.
This weekend, Alexandria officers along with Virginia State Police, will operate a sobriety checkpoint Saturday night, from approximately 10:00 p.m. on June 8, through the early morning hours of Sunday, June 9. The checkpoint will be located on a major road and will coincide with T.C. Williams High School’s prom night.
The following weekend, police will run a mobile patrol operation, from approximately 8:00 p.m. on Friday, June 14, through 3:30 a.m., Saturday, June 15. Officers will patrol heavily traveled corridors and look for aggressive driving behaviors and other types of moving violations indicative of DWI. In addition, plain clothes investigators will make contact with hotel managers and ask for their assistance in preventing hotel room parties where underage drinking sometimes occurs.
There will be another sobriety checkpoint on the last weekend of increased enforcement. On Saturday, June 22, at approximately 8:00 p.m., officers will set up a stationary checkpoint on a major road and target impaired drivers through the early morning hours of Sunday, June 23.
