CITY OF ALEXANDRIA MAYOR LOOKS FORWARD
TO SUCCESSFUL PUBLIC HOUSING PROJECT

Following today’s joint announcement by the Alexandria City Council and the Alexandria Redevelopment and Housing Authority about possible sites to locate off-site replacement units for Samuel Madden Public Housing, Mayor Kerry J. Donley made the following comments:

“Over the last 30 years, Alexandria has been recognized as a leader in the affordable housing area, including redeveloping older public housing communities and providing scattered site housing. In 1972, the Alexandria City Council adopted Resolution 99, which was amended to become Resolution 830, and as far as I know, the only resolution of its kind adopted by a local government. This resolution is a major commitment because it says that for each unit of public housing that is redeveloped, one unit of publicly-assisted housing will be provided. This will be the fourth time in Alexandria’s history that the City Council and the ARHA Board of Commissioners have redeveloped public housing, choosing to locate the replacement housing on scattered sites.”

The Mayor went on to say “Redeveloping public housing has been very successful in Alexandria. We have been able to greatly improve the quality of the housing for public housing residents, and demonstrate to everyone the benefits of having economically, socially, racially and ethnically integrated communities both on the redeveloped site and any off-site locations. Working together, the City Council and the ARHA Board are looking forward to another successful redevelopment project.”
