Alexandria Fire Department Employee Arrested

A City of Alexandria Fire Department employee has been placed on administrative leave without pay after he was arrested today (May 6), for falsifying overtime records. Ralph T. Rohrer, a battalion chief who has worked for the City since 1981, was formally charged with two felony counts.

An Alexandria Fire Department review of overtime accounts this spring found discrepancies in Rohrer’s time records. Because of the criminal implications, the matter was turned over to the Police Department for investigation.

Last week, the criminal investigation was concluded and the Alexandria Commonwealth’s Attorney reviewed the case and Police obtained two felony warrants in connection with a March 15, 2002, forged overtime record. Today, Rohrer, a 43-year-old Frederick, Md., resident, turned himself in at Police headquarters at 2 p.m. He was charged with one count of Obtaining Money Under False Pretenses and one count of Forgery and Uttering, for submitting a Fire Department overtime record he knew to be forged. He was released on $1,000 bond.

In addition to the criminal prosecution, the City is conducting its own administrative inquiry into the matter.

Rohrer was hired by the City in February 1981 as a Firefighter and has been a battalion chief since 1995.
