Alexandria Police Investigate a Fatal Accident;
Cyclist Struck by Dump Truck

The Alexandria Police Department is investigating a fatal accident at Duke and Dove Streets which occurred at 7:26 a.m. The victim, believed to be a 33-year-old man, was riding a mountain-style bicycle east on Duke Street when he began to cross over the right-hand turn to Dove Street.

The dump truck, operated by a 27-year-old Alexandria man, was attempting to turn right onto Dove Street when it struck the cyclist. The truck ran over the cyclist and dragged him a short distance. The victim was trapped under the truck for a short time before Alexandria Fire and EMS personnel extricated him. The victim suffered massive internal injuries and was flown by helicopter to Washington Hospital Center where he was pronounced dead at 8:30 a.m.

The Accident Reconstruction Team is investigating the accident. No charges have been filed pending the outcome of the investigation. The victim’s identity is being withheld until his next of kin is notified.

At this time, two lanes of eastbound Duke Street at the accident scene are open to traffic; the far right lane is closed. Due to traffic delays, motorists are urged to avoid using eastbound Duke Street toward Old Town and northbound Telegraph Road to Duke Street.

This the first fatal traffic accident in Alexandria this year.
