Alexandria Commission Releases Report Card on Youth Well-Being

The Alexandria Youth Policy Commission recently released its 2001 Community Report Card on Youth Well-Being. The Report Card tracks the City’s progress in addressing youth issues by comparing data from multiple national and regional sources. The youth well-being issues covered in the Report Card include health, education, safety, economic security and recreation.

“The Community Report Card on Youth Well-Being is an important tool as we continue to work to make Alexandria a place where children are born healthy and grow up safe, nurtured, well educated, and prepared to be productive members of our community,” said Alexandria Mayor Kerry J. Donley, Chairperson of the Commission. “As we strive to reach our goals related to the quality of life of Alexandria’s youth, we must continually look to the information provided in this report to track our progress and chart our course.”

The Report Card compares Alexandria’s data with that of several Virginia jurisdictions and with statewide averages to provide context to trends within the community. Fairfax and Arlington counties were chosen based on their similarity to Alexandria in regard to geographical location and high immigrant populations. Hampton was selected due to its similarity to Alexandria in size and relative wealth and poverty levels, and because, like Alexandria, it is an incorporated city rather than a county.

The Report Card uses data gathered from the U.S. Census Bureau, the Commonwealth of Virginia School Performance Report Card, the Alexandria Department of Recreation, Parks and Cultural Activities, and 2001 Kids Count in Virginia, produced by the Action Alliance for Virginia Children and Youth.

The Alexandria Youth Policy Commission was established in 1997 to make recommendations to City Council on youth issues. Copies of the Commission’s 2001 Report Card on Youth Well-Being are available from the City of Alexandria Department of Human Services at 703.838.0990.
