Lori E. Godwin Passes Away

Lori E. Godwin passed away March 10, 2002, due to complications following acute liver disease. Ms. Godwin was the Assistant City Manager for Operations for the City of Alexandria. She is survived by her husband, Kurt Godwin, of the Alexandria area of Fairfax County; mother Joan Marczak, of Plainfield, IL; brothers Paul Marczak of Altamonte Springs, FL; Larry (wife Ann Hawley-Marczak) and nephew Jack Marczak of Plymouth, MN.

Ms. Godwin joined the City of Alexandria in March, 1988 as a Budget Management Analyst. She was promoted to Deputy Director of the Office of Management and Budget in July, 1990. Ms. Godwin was named Acting Director of OMB in September, 1993 and Director in November, 1993. She was promoted to Assistant City Manager for Operations in August, 2000.

Ms. Godwin’s professionalism and dedication earned her recognition from her peers and from the community. In 1990, Ms. Godwin received the Special Achievement Award from the American Society for Public Administration, Northern Virginia chapter. In 1994, she was nominated for the Anna Lee Berman Award for Outstanding Leadership in Governmental Finance. In 1995, she was the recipient of the Alexandria Jaycees E. Judith Krasnow Award for outstanding contributions to the City and its residents. Special notice was given to her contributions that year as co-editor of the City’s Annual Report. In April, 1999, the City Manager presented Ms. Godwin with a Special Merit Award for her outstanding performance as Acting Director of Financial and Information Technology Services.

Ms. Godwin was a committed and dedicated public servant to the people of Alexandria. As Assistant City Manager for Operations she was liaison with the directors of Human Services, Recreation, Parks and Cultural Activities, Office of Historic Alexandria, Citizens Assistance, and Mental Health, Mental Retardation. Ms. Godwin earned a great deal of respect from her co-workers because of her hard work, professionalism and thoroughness. She cared deeply for the citizens of Alexandria and her devotion was evident in the quality of her work. She worked tirelessly on youth issues, including the Alexandria Campaign on Adolescent Pregnancy (ACAP), after-school care, youth developmental assets and recreation opportunities.

Prior to her employment with the City of Alexandria, Ms. Godwin worked for a non-profit employment and training organization and as a research associate with The Urban Institute in Washington, DC.

Ms. Godwin was born in Berwyn, IL in 1961 and graduated from the University of Illinois in 1983. The family suggested memorial gifts in her name may be made to the Nature Conservancy.
