City of Alexandria to Turn Off Old Town Holiday Lights

The City of Alexandria is in the process of turning off the festive lights that adorned the trees flanking King, Union, and Washington Streets throughout the holiday season. The lights, which are traditionally lit the weekend after Thanksgiving through the first week of the new year, were left up longer this year in an attempt to attract locals and visitors to the shops and businesses along the illuminated streets.

This year, 186 trees – running from the Potomac River to the Metro on King Street, around City Hall and Market Square, from Duke to Cameron Streets on Union Street, and from Prince to Cameron Street on Washington Street – were lighted with the small, white lights which are a popular decorative element during the holiday season. Trees were decorated with anywhere from 1 string of 100 lights to almost 30 strings, based on the size of the tree.

While the lights will remain on the trees throughout the year, the strings will be unplugged and the extension cords which run from the tree to the power source will be removed. Leaving the lights up should not cause any harm to the trees. The lights are not tightly wrapped around any tree limbs or stems, which could subject them to damage.

The lights will be turned on again for the 2002 holiday season.
