City of Alexandria Receives Budget Award

The City of Alexandria recently announced that it has been awarded the Distinguished Budget Presentation Award by the Government Finance Officer’s Association of the United States and Canada (GFOA) for its FY 2001 annual budget. This is the 13th year that the City of Alexandria has been honored by the GFOA for its budget preparation.

In order to receive this award, the City was required to satisfy the GFOA’s nationally recognized guidelines for effective budget presentation. These guidelines are designed to assess how well the City’s budget serves as a policy document, a financial plan, an operations guide, and a communications device.

The GFOA’s Budget Awards Program, the only national awards program in governmental budgeting, is designed to encourage governments to prepare budget documents of the highest quality to meet the needs of both decision-makers and citizens. The award reflects the City’s commitment to meeting the highest principles of governmental budgeting.

During FY 2001, an estimated 925 governments submitted budgets for consideration by the GFOA’s Distinguished Budget Presentation Awards Program. Since the inception of the Program in 1984, approximately 800 entities have received the award.
