Donley has announced that the City will again join the Alexandria Chamber of Commerce and the Alexandria Economic Development Partnership, Inc. (AEDP) in sponsoring the 2002 Alexandria Technology Achievement Award. Nominations are being sought of companies which are developing new technology or innovative uses for existing technology. Companies can be nominated by their clients, customers or other businesses, or they may nominate themselves for the 2002 Technology Achievement Award. Nomination forms are available on line at http://www.alexchamber.com/ataa02 or by calling 703-549-1000. The nomination deadline for the 2002 Award is 5 p.m. on Friday, January 18. The 2002 Alexandria Technology Achievement Award will be presented during Alexandria Technology Achievement Week, March 18 - 22. This week spotlights Alexandria’s important technology sector and showcases the businesses which are developing new technology or innovative uses for existing technology. A blue ribbon panel of technology industry experts will review the nominations and select the finalists, which will be announced on Tuesday, February 13. The winner of the 2002 Alexandria Technology Achievement Award will be announced at an awards luncheon on Friday, March 22. Mayor Donley and the Chairman of the Commission on Information Technology will present the Technology Achievement Award to the winning company. Alexandria Technology Achievement Week and the Alexandria Technology Achievement Award are sponsored by the City of Alexandria, the Alexandria Chamber of Commerce, and the Alexandria Economic Development Partnership, Inc. The award originated in 1997 with the Ad Hoc Task Force on Information and Communication Technologies, which has been succeeded by the Commission on Information Technology. The Commission is comprised of members of the Alexandria City School Board, the Chamber of Commerce, the Library Board, City telecommunications providers, citizens and City Council members Del Pepper and Joyce Woodson. The winner of the 2001 Technology Achievement Award was Digital Paper, Inc., for its docQuest family of solutions, which allows complex technical documents, such as engineering drawings, to be sent quickly and securely over the Internet. This Old Town-based firm has 37 employees. Finalists for the 2001 award included Aaron B. Floyd Enterprises, Inc., Segue Technologies, Inc., and Carney Interactive, Inc. The National Center for Missing and Exploited Children was given special recognition by the judges for the innovative use of technology in serving as a national clearinghouse for information on missing and exploited children. Technology Achievement Week and the 2002 Award are part of the City’s efforts to promote Alexandria, which is home to more than 400 technology firms employing an estimated 12,000 workers, as a location for technology companies. # # # |
