City of Alexandria Announces Schedule of Services for
Christmas and New Year’s Holidays


City government offices, including the administrative offices of the Alexandria Police Department, will be closed for the Christmas holidays on Monday, December 24, Tuesday, December 25, and Tuesday, January 1. Full police patrol and emergency services will be in place during these days.

In accordance with Virginia State Law, the Alexandria Police Department will suspend enforcement of parking restrictions at metered spaces, as well as time restrictions in residential permit parking districts and other areas with signed parking time limits, on Monday, December 24, and Tuesday, December 25. The same parking suspensions apply on Monday, December 31, and Tuesday, January 1. All other parking regulations will be in effect during the holidays.

Additionally, HOV restrictions on Washington Street and Route 1 will be lifted on Monday, December 24, Tuesday, December 25, Monday, December 31, and Tuesday, January 1.

The Treasury and Revenue Divisions of the Finance Department, which are regularly open on Saturday mornings for payment of property taxes and parking tickets, will be closed on Saturday, December 22.

City schools will be closed on Friday, December 21, and will remain closed through Tuesday, January 1. Students return to school on Wednesday, January 2.

Trash and recycling collection services will be delayed by one day for the week of Monday, December 24 through Friday, December 28. The following week, there will be regular trash collection on Monday, December 31, but the rest of the week, there will be a one day delay. For example, customers whose regular trash day is Tuesday will have their trash collected on Wednesday, and customers whose regular trash day is Wednesday will have their trash collected on Thursday, and so on.

All recreation centers will be closed on Monday, December 24, Tuesday, December 25 and Tuesday, January 1. On Monday, December 31, Chinquapin Park Recreation Center will be open from 6:00 a.m. to 6:00 p.m. and the Charles Houston, Cora Kelly, Patrick Henry, Mount Vernon, Nannie J. Lee, Charles Barrett and William Ramsay recreation centers will be open from 9:00 a.m. to 6:00 p.m.

City libraries will be closed on Monday, December 24, Tuesday and December 25. They close early, at 5 p.m., on Monday, December 31, and remain closed on Tuesday, January 1.

DASH bus service will operate on a Saturday schedule on Monday, December 24, and there will be no service on Tuesday, December 25. DASH will operate its usual weekday schedule on Monday, December 31, and there will be no service on Tuesday, January 1.

State offices in Alexandria, including the Circuit, General District, and Juvenile and Domestic Relations District courts, the Clerk of Court Office and the Alexandria Health Department, will be closed on Monday, December 24, Tuesday, December 25, Monday, December 31, and Tuesday, January 1.
