CITY CELEBRATES 30TH ANNIVERSARY OF
INTEGRATION AND FOOTBALL CHAMPIONSHIP

The public is invited to join officials from the City of Alexandria and Alexandria Public Schools on Dec. 3, 2001, at 7 p.m. in a special celebration marking 30 years since the final integration of T.C. Williams High School and the resulting state football championship that was chronicled in last year’s blockbuster movie, “Remember the Titans.” The celebration will be held at T.C. Williams High School located at 3330 King St.
The featured speaker will be former City Council Member Ira L. Robinson, who served from 1970 to 1973 as the first black Alexandria councilman since Reconstruction. Other participants in the celebration will be Human Rights Commission Chairperson Nancy O. Jenkins, Mayor Kerry J. Donley, School Board Chairman Mark R. Eaton, City Council Member William D. Euille, former Titan Coaches Herman Boone and Bill Yoast, and former student Rufus Littlejohn and current students Branden Beasley and Yodit Gebremariam. A video compilation will be shown of reflections of key leaders during the early ‘70s.
“We will celebrate not only the course of events that brought to bear tremendous change during this tumultuous time, but particularly the individuals who showed a city their depth of character and their belief in equality, which started the healing of deep societal wounds,” said Mayor Donley.
In the audience will be many members of the ‘71 Titan Football Championship team as well as city and school leaders of the past 30 years.
