FIRST CLASS OF THE ALEXANDRIA FIRE DEPARTMENT’S
CITIZEN ACADEMY BEGINS TODAY

The first session of the Alexandria Fire Department Citizen Academy is scheduled for Nov. 5, 7 and 10, 2001. The Department created the Citizen Academy to give residents of Alexandria an opportunity to learn about the department’s firefighting, emergency medical and other responsibilities, and to participate in some practical training.

The Academy includes 16 hours of classroom and hands-on training at the Fire and EMS Training Academy and will conclude with a live-fire exercise at the Burn Building. Classroom instruction will include CPR, residential sprinkler systems, familiarization with medic units, engine and truck companies, and fire extinguishers. The hands-on instruction will include extinguishing a small fire with an extinguisher, using the thermal imager, and extinguishing a fire in the Burn Building.

Class size is limited to 12 and the minimum age for participants is 16. For information on how to participate, contact Richard A Sisler, Public Education Officer at 703-838-5090 extension 709.
