Alexandria Police Receive National Re-Accreditation

The Alexandria Police Department was officially re-accredited by the Commission on Accreditation for Law Enforcement Agencies, Inc. (CALEA), over the weekend. CALEA’s board of commissioners announced the Department’s re-accreditation on Saturday, July 28, at CALEA’s annual conference in St. Louis.

One of the first agencies in the country to be accredited 15 years ago, the Alexandria Police Department must comply with more than 400 highly regarded standards to qualify. “National accreditation is highly prized since it represents certification and recognition by law enforcement professionals,” Chief Samarra said.

In April, CALEA assessors visited police headquarters and hosted a community meeting in Alexandria as part of the extensive accreditation process. Following their on-site inspection, the assessors reported that the department “enjoys a high level of citizen trust and support” and that members of the public who had met with the assessors “praised the agency and the chief for its professionalism and delivery of service.”

The Alexandria Police Department was first accredited by CALEA in 1986, and was previously re-accredited in 1991 and in 1996. As CALEA now requires re-accreditation every three years, the department will now undergo its next process in 2004 to ensure compliance with national standards.
