Police Arrest Alexandria Man for Distribution of Child Pornography,
Suspect Had Approached Children in Old Town

Alexandria detectives and federal agents are investigating a 44-year-old Alexandria man for distributing child pornography. Carl Eugene Grether of 416 North Union Street was arrested on Sunday, May 27, after he approached two girls in the Wilkes Street tunnel and gave them a piece of paper with pornographic pictures on it. The girls, ages 6 and 9, alerted their father who observed the suspect and immediately alerted police. The suspect was arrested nearby.

Grether has been charged with one count of Distribution of Child Pornography and one count of Possession of Obscene Material. He is currently being held at the Adult Detention Center on an $11,000 bond.

Police are also investigating a case of child pornography being left near a home in south Old Town. Between Friday, May 25, and Tuesday, May 29, someone left pornographic pictures similar to those in the Wilkes Street case outside a home in the 500 block of South Lee Street. The residents of that address alerted police on Tuesday afternoon.

Anyone knowing of similar activity, including the distribution of pornographic materials to juveniles, is asked to call Alexandria detectives at (703) 838-4711.

Due to the on-going criminal investigation, a photo of the suspect is not available at this time.
