MEDIA ADVISORY FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE: THURSDAY, APRIL 19, 2001 CONTACT: JENNIFER DELONG ALEXANDRIA OFFICE OF RECYCLING (703) 751-5872 Alexandria School Celebrates Earth Day The City of Alexandria's Department of Transportation and Environmental Services is celebrating Earth Day with John Adams Elementary School students on Friday, April 27, from 8:30 a.m. to 10:30 a.m. in the school parking lot. First-grade students will have the opportunity to learn about the recycling process when recycling trucks and their operators make an on-site visit to conduct recycling demonstrations and give tours of the trucks. Alexandria's new recycling mascot Robbie the Recycling Squirrel, will also be making his debut at this event and introducing himself to students. In case of inclement weather, contact the Recycling Office for a rescheduled date. John Adams Elementary School is taking a lead on recycling by implementing a pilot to collect paper in each of its classrooms and in its office. First-grade teacher Ms. Hilary Hinnant initiated the progam through the school's Ecology Club, which will oversee the program and provide support for picking up the paper from classrooms each week. John Adams Elementary School Ecology club has already prepared for the Earth Day event by participating in recycling educational activities conducted by the City of Alexandria's Department of Transportation and Environmental Services. Students learned about what materials can be recycling and how recycled materials can be made into new products. The recycling truck demonstration will provide students the opportunity to see the process first-hand. For more information on how a school can celebrate Earth Day or participate in recycling, contact Jennifer DeLong, Recycling Specialist, City of Alexandria's Department of Transportation and Environmental Services, at (703) 751-5872. -30- |
