Police Investigate a Critical Accident

Today, at 5:37 p.m., Alexandria police and medics responded to the 1400 block of North Beauregard Street for the report of a child struck by a car. The victim, a 5-year-old boy and City resident, was flown by helicopter to Children’s Hospital with potentially life-threatening injuries.

Initial investigation indicates that the accident occurred when the child ran from the west side of North Beauregard Street into traffic. He was struck by a 1997 Saturn station wagon, traveling south in the lefthand lane. The driver, a 59-year-old female City resident, was not injured. After the child was struck, there was a chain reaction accident involving a total of five vehicles. None of the other drivers nor their passengers were injured.

The injured boy was with other children when he ran out into the street. He suffered head and chest injuries and is being evaluated now.

Police are not releasing the names of the victim or the driver, and no charges have been filed.

The Accident Reconstruction Team is on the scene and southbound traffic is being re-routed through an apartment complex. The northbound lanes of North Beauregard Street are open, but there are significant delays in both directions.
