Alexandria Police Officer Shot During a Training Exercise
Today, at approximately 8:45 a.m., an Alexandria police officer was shot while participating in a training exercise at the firing range located at 5261 Eisenhower Avenue. The officer, a four-year-member of the Alexandria Police Department, was taking part in a Special Operations Team shooting exercise when the accident occurred. The officer was flown by Medstar helicopter to Washington Hospital Center. He is in critical condition and undergoing surgery at this time.
The officer suffered a single gunshot wound to the abdomen. Initial investigation indicates that another officer, also involved in the same exercise, discharged his weapon, a Glock 40-caliber semi-automatic handgun, striking the victim officer. The injured officer was wearing his ballistic vest when he was shot.
Both officers, whose names are being withheld at this time, are members of the Special Operations Team. The Corporal Charles W. Hill Firearms Training Facility will remain closed today as investigation into the incident continues.
