Grand Jury Indicts Gregory D. Murphy for the Murder of Kevin Shifflett

This afternoon, an Alexandria grand jury indicted Gregory D. Murphy, a 29-year-old Alexandria man, for the murder of Kevin Shifflett. The grand jury returned an indictment against Murphy for the April 19 stabbing death of the 8-year-old in front of the boy’s great-grandparents’ home in 100 block of East Custis Avenue.

Commonwealth’s Attorney S. Randolph Sengel and Chief of Police Charles E. Samarra announced the indictment at a news conference this evening at the Alexandria Courthouse. In addition to the murder indictment, Murphy was also indicted on two counts of malicious wounding for assaulting Thelma Taylor, Kevin’s 81-year-old great-grandmother, and for stabbing Christine DeCourt, a 51-year-old Good Samaritan, when they came to Kevin’s aid.

Murphy is currently being held at the Fairfax County jail on unrelated charges. He will be transported back to the City tomorrow, October 5, for a 10 a.m. advisement hearing in Alexandria Circuit Court.
