Donley has announced that the City will again join with the Alexandria Chamber of Commerce and the Alexandria Economic Development Partnership, Inc. (AEDP) to sponsor the 2001 Alexandria Technology Achievement Award. The nomination deadline for the 2001 Award is 5:00 p.m. on Tuesday, October 31. Alexandria’s expanding technology sector will be in the spotlight March 12 - 16, 2001, during Alexandria Technology Achievement Week, which will showcase local businesses that have developed new technology or innovative uses for existing technology. The Alexandria Technology Achievement Award will be presented as part of the week’s events. Alexandria-based companies may nominate themselves for the 2001 Technology Achievement Award, or nominations may be submitted by clients, customers, or others on behalf of the technology firm. Nomination forms are available on line at http://www.alexchamber.com/techawards2001.html or through the City’s or AEDP’s websites. A blue ribbon panel of technology industry experts will review the nominations and select the finalists, which will be announced on Monday, February 1. The winner of the 2001 Alexandria Technology Achievement Award will be announced at an awards luncheon on Friday, March 16. Mayor Donley and the Chair of the Alexandria Chamber of Commerce will present the Technology Achievement Award to the winning company. Alexandria Technology Achievement Week and the Alexandria Technology Achievement Award are sponsored by the City of Alexandria, the Alexandria Chamber of Commerce, and the Alexandria Economic Development Partnership, Inc. The award originated in 1997 with the Ad Hoc Task Force on Information and Communication Technologies, which has been succeeded by the Commission on Information Technology. The Commission is comprised of members of the Alexandria City School Board, the Chamber of Commerce, the Library Board, City telecommunications providers, citizens and members of City Council, Del Pepper and Joyce Woodson. The winner of the 2000 Technology Achievement Award was The Motley Fool, Inc., a multimedia financial education company. This Old Town-based firm has approximately 350 employees, the majority of whom are based in Alexandria. Finalists for the 2000 award included kinkos.com (formerly liveprint.com), MTS Technologies, Inc., National Center for Missing and Exploited Children, and webcasts.com. The Challenger Center for Space Science Education was given special recognition by the judges for excellence in education. Technology Achievement Week and the 2001 Award are part of the City’s efforts to promote Alexandria, which is home to more than 400 technology firms employing nearly 12,000 workers, as a location for technology companies. # # # |
