Alexandria Hosts Pep Rally to Remember the Titans

On Wednesday, September 27, Mayor Kerry J. Donley and members of the Alexandria City Council will host a traditional pep rally at Market Square in honor of the 1971 T.C. Williams High School football team whose triumphant story is now featured in the new Disney film, Remember the Titans. Newschannel 8 sports anchor Glenn Harris will be the guest host at the free event which runs from 6:00 p.m. to 7:30 p.m., in front of Alexandria City Hall (301 King Street).
Players, coaches and cheerleaders from the ‘71 team will reunite at the rally, as the City welcomes back its hometown heroes in celebration of the film’s release on Friday, September 29. To encourage the crowd to show their Titan spirit, members of the current T.C. Williams marching band and cheerleading squad will perform at the event, and Glenn Harris will welcome featured speakers, including Mayor Donley and Herman Boone, the head coach portrayed on screen by Denzel Washington. Mayor Donley, who played against the champion Titans as a member of the Bishop Ireton football team, will read a proclamation naming Friday, September 29, as "Remember the Titans Day" in Alexandria.
Children attending the pep rally will get to meet the real-life players whose true story of unity and commitment brought Alexandria its first AAA State Championship in football in more than 50 years. Market Square will be decorated with banners and balloons in Titan colors of red, white and blue, and special displays will feature news articles, team photos, game programs and other memorabilia from the 1971 undefeated season, along with photos from the filming of Remember the Titans.
