Alexandria Police Investigate a Fatal Traffic Accident

Today at 1:15 p.m., Alexandria police responded to the 1500 block of North Van Dorn Street for the report of a serious accident involving a motorcycle. The driver of the motorcycle, a 23-year-old male City resident, died a short time later.

Initial investigation reveals that a 31-year-old female City resident was attempting to pull out into the southbound lanes of North Van Dorn Street from a driveway on the east side of the road. As she attempted to cross over the northbound lanes, her vehicle, a 1997 Toyota Corolla, collided with a 1995 Kawasaki motorcycle traveling north in the lefthand lane.

The motorcyclist, David Richard Pierson, suffered massive internal injuries and was flown by helicopter to INOVA Fairfax Hospital where he was pronounced dead at 2:15 p.m. The driver of the Toyota was not injured and there were no passengers in her car.

Both the north and southbound lanes of North Van Dorn Street between Kenmore and Sanger avenues will be closed until approximately 5:30 p.m. while members of the Accident Reconstruction Team conduct their investigation.

The cause of the accident remains under investigation, and no charges have been filed. This is the fifth traffic fatality in the City this year.
