City of Alexandria Conducts an On-Line Survey of the
Gridlock Reduction Project
The City of Alexandria in conjunction with the Alexandria Police Department is seeking citizens to participate in an on-line survey to evaluate the effectiveness of the Gridlock Reduction Project. The survey will run from Tuesday, August 22, through Thursday, September 7, and the results will be used as part of the City's review this fall to determine whether or not to make the program permanent.
The Gridlock Reduction Project was initiated in the City at the suggestion of City Council as a way to ease rush hour traffic and reduce traffic congestion at certain intersections. Motorists blocking intersections and impeding the flow of traffic have been the target of this pilot program. This spring, a two-week Police Department survey of ten pre-selected major City intersections confirmed that there was significant congestion at these locations caused by vehicles blocking or impeding the intersections.
Beginning May 8 and continuing through July 7, officers were positioned at these intersections to direct traffic and prevent the them from being blocked by motorists driving during the evening rush hour. Since July 7, the program has continued during Thursday and Friday evening rush hours. It is difficult to accurately measure the overall success of the program and the City would like to hear from affected motorists. To complete the survey on-line, visit the City’s website (ci.alexandria.va.us). Anyone wishing to complete a hard copy can pick up the survey at City Hall (301 King Street) or at police headquarters (2003 Mill Road). To receive the survey by mail, call (703) 838-4744.
