Alexandria Police Make Arrest in 1991 Homicide

Detectives with the Alexandria Police Department have arrested a former Alexandria man in Miami for the 1991 shooting death of his girlfriend. Nicolas Reyes, a 35-year-old man, was formally charged with Murder on Saturday, July 22, after being extradited from Miami.

On April 30, 1991, Reyes shot and killed Bartola Reyes, 27, in their home in the 200 block of Lynhaven Drive. Ms. Reyes, who was pregnant at the time, was attempting to end their relationship when the suspect shot her multiple times.

A warrant was issued that same day, but the suspect remained a fugitive until last week when he was arrested by Metro-Dade police in Miami.

The case received extensive exposure in the Spanish-language media, with tips coming in from as far away as Central America. Acting on these tips, Alexandria detectives notified Metro-Dade officials and they apprehended Reyes on Tuesday, July 18. He waived extradition and was returned to Alexandria this weekend.

The suspect is being held without bond at the Alexandria Detention Center.
