The City of Alexandria has launched its re-designed web site, re-created to make information easier to find and offering E-commerce options to users.

The new site now features five drop-down navigation boxes that allow users to go directly from the first page to a specific subject area of interest. The site also boasts a "Personalize" option on the main home page that allows frequent users to create bookmark-like icons to cite their favorite pages.

In addition, the main home page features a skyline depiction of Alexandria that spans across 350 years of the City’s history. By clicking on various segments of the artwork, users can link to significant historic moments in time.

A rolling scroll on the top of the page provides timely updates or current topics of interest and important deadlines.

The site also allows citizens to pay by credit card their personal property, business property and real estate taxes and parking ticket fines using a secure on-line connection.

The site features additional graphics, photos and greater flexibility for adding new information. Improvements to the site will continue as City officials develop new ways of making the site even more interactive for users. Soon, the names of all of the individuals who serve on the City’s 77 boards and commissions will be added, followed by real estate assessments information later this year.

The site also includes features that give citizens an opportunity to give feedback on City services and issues as well as provide feedback on the City’s enhanced web site.

"This re-design is just one of many efforts City government is undertaking to meet the changing needs of its citizens," Alexandria City Manager Philip Sunderland said. "Our goal is to continue to expand the site’s interactive functions to make government services more convenient and accessible."

The web’s re-design was done with guidance provided by the City Council-chartered Commission on Information Technology, as well as with the help of City staff and an outside computer technology consulting firm.
