The City of Alexandria is encouraging citizens to "Bike to Work" on Friday, May 19, to raise awareness about the benefits of bicycle commuting as a clean, quiet, efficient and energy-saving mode of transportation.

In honor of the event, the City will have bagels, coffee and orange juice for cyclists at Market Square from 7 a.m. to 8:30 a.m. Cyclists can meet other bike commuters, find bike accessories, register their bicycles with the City’s Police Department and receive information on bike commuting, as well as bus, rail and car/van pooling. Participants also can enter their names in a drawing to win a new bike!

"Bicycle commuting benefits both the individual and the community because it incorporates a healthy form of exercise into an individual’s daily routine and does not contribute to traffic congestion, traffic-related stress or parking demand," Alexandria City Manager Philip Sunderland said.

Last year, Alexandria held its first Bike to Work Day event and nearly 80 bicycle commuters participated.

Event sponsors this year include Alexandria Rideshare, the Department of Recreation, Parks and Cultural Activities, the Police Department, the Bicycle Study Committee, DASH, the Washington Area Bicyclist Association, the Washington Metropolitan Area Transit Authority, Virginia Railway Express, St. Elmo’s, the Chesapeake Bagel Bakery and Spokes, Etc.
