Alexandria Police Investigate the Fatal Stabbing of a Boy;
Unknown Suspect Remains at Large

The Alexandria Police Department is investigating the homicide of a juvenile outside a residence in the 100 block of East Custis Avenue. At approximately 3:47 p.m., police were called to that location for the report of a stabbing. Police discovered one victim deceased at the scene and two additional victims who were taken to local hospitals.

The deceased victim, an 8-year-old boy identified as Kevin Shifflett, had been playing outside with other children when an unknown suspect approached him. The suspect attacked the boy with a knife, and two women attempted to intervene.

One woman, a 51-year-old who was passing by, suffered a stab wound and was flown to MedStar at Washington Hospital Center where she is in serious condition and undergoing surgery. The second woman, the 80-year-old grandmother of the boy, was taken by ambulance to Alexandria Hospital where she is being treated for minor lacerations.

Police are searching for the suspect who is described as a black male, 20 to 25 years old, 5 feet 9 inches to 5 feet 10 inches tall, with a medium build. He was last seen wearing a dark blue t-shirt, a light brown sweater and dark pants. Police consider this suspect armed and extremely dangerous. Anyone observing this suspect should call 911 immediately.

Police have not determined a motive for this fatal attack.
