Alexandria Police Investigate a Serious Traffic Accident

The Alexandria Police Department is investigating a traffic accident which occurred this afternoon in Del Ray. At approximately 1:39 p.m., two vehicles collided near the intersection of West Braddock and Russell roads, critically injuring a 92-year-old female City resident.

A 1987 Chrysler New Yorker was turning right from northbound Russell Road onto eastbound West Braddock Road when it collided with a 1986 Chevrolet Caprice. The Caprice, operated by an 82-year-old female City resident, had been traveling east on West Braddock Road and was crossing over Russell Road when the accident occurred. The Chrysler, driven by another 92-year-old female City resident, struck a utility pole on the south side of West Braddock Road.

The injured woman, a passenger in the Chrysler, was flown by helicopter to Fairfax Hospital where she remains in intensive care in critical condition. The drivers of both vehicles were examined by medics at the scene but did not require further medical treatment.

The Accident Reconstruction Team responded to the scene and closed West Braddock Road between Commonwealth Avenue and Russell Road while officers conducted their investigation. No charges have been filed in this case pending completion of the investigation. Speed and alcohol are not believed to be factors in this accident.
