The Honorable Donald S. Beyer, Jr., former lieutenant governor for the Commonwealth of Virginia, will be the keynote speaker at the Alexandria Technology Achievement Award Luncheon on Friday, March 17th at 12 noon, at the Radisson Hotel (formerly the Ramada), located at 901 N. Fairfax Street in Old Town Alexandria. Alexandria Mayor Kerry J. Donley and Mr. Beyer will present the 2000 Alexandria Technology Achievement Award to one of five finalists. In addition, they will present a special recognition award for excellence in education technology. Serving two terms as Virginia’s lieutenant governor from 1989 to 1997, Mr. Beyer has been credited with eliminating disincentives to high-tech research and development in the Virginia tax code. He also chaired the Economic Recovery Commission and was co-founder of the Northern Virginia Technology Council. He currently serves on the board of Lightly Expressed, a fiber optic lighting design and manufacturing firm, and he is a member of the Northern Virginia Business Roundtable. Since his return to private life, he has grown the family business to a chain of car dealerships, including Land Rover, Subaru and three Volvo stores. He also serves on the Volvo International Product Development Team. Alexandria Technology Achievement Week, held March 13-17, is a joint effort between the City of Alexandria, the Alexandria Economic Development Partnership, Inc. (AEDP) and the Alexandria Chamber of Commerce to highlight the City’s technology business sector. For more information on Technology Achievement Week or event registration, please call the Alexandria Chamber of Commerce at (703)549-1000, or e-mail ksmith@alexchamber.com. The Alexandria Technology Award and Technology Week originated with the City’s Ad Hoc Task Force on Information and Communication Technologies, co-chaired by Alexandria Councilwoman Redella S. Pepper and Council Member Lois Walker. The award, along with the Technology Achievement Week, began in 1997 to recognize the contributions of technology firms to the City’s economy and to promote the City as an ideal location for technology. Alexandria is the center of Northern Virginia’s fast-growing technology industry. Currently, more than 200 technology firms employ more than 10,000 workers in Alexandria. |
