The Alexandria Commission for Women is sponsoring its 20th "Salute to Women" awards banquet on Monday, March 20, at 6 p.m., at the Holiday Inn Hotel and Suites, 625 First Street in Alexandria.

More than 20 women were nominated to receive awards this year. All nominees will be honored but only seven will be selected as award recipients.

WJLA-TV Channel 7 evening news anchor Maureen Bunyan will be the keynote speaker. Ms. Bunyan, one of the Washington area’s most respected journalists, has spent over a quarter of a century as a news anchor, reporter and public speaker. She is the co-chair of the International Women’s Media Foundation, a global network of women journalists. She is a founder of the National Association of Black Journalists, a member of the boards of the National Press Foundation, the National Women’s Hall of Fame, the Commission on Working Women and the Meyer Foundation. Ms. Bunyan was the winner of the 1990 Journalist of the Year award given by the National Association of Black Journalists. The recipient of several local Emmy Awards, Ms. Bunyan has earned a reputation as an expert speaker on news and journalism, on the role of women as leaders and on international issues. She also is the founder of the Women’s Independent Media Foundation and serves on the board of the National Commission on Working Women.

Tickets can be purchased for $45 each. Proceeds from ticket sales benefit programs of the Alexandria Office on Women, including 24-hour domestic violence and sexual assault response programs, job search assistance to unemployed and underemployed women, mentoring for young teens and educational programs on women’s health and other issues affecting women and their children.

The "Salute to Women" awards banquet was created in 1980 by the Alexandria Commission for Women in order to recognize the contributions women have made in the Alexandria community.
