City of Alexandria Continues to Offer Free Salt/Sand Mix to City Residents Through Friday
The City of Alexandria is continuing to offer through Friday free salt/sand mix to Alexandria residents who cannot locate or purchase salt to treat their sidewalks to clear them of snow and ice.
The salt/sand mix will be available in the parking lot of the City’s Recycling Center, located at 3550 Wheeler Avenue. Residents can gather the mix day or night. It is self-service and residents must bring their own containers and shovels to gather the mix.
On Saturday, the City unloaded one-and-a-half tons of salt and sand at the site. By mid-day Monday, only 100 pounds of the mix remained. The City is unloading additional salt and sand for this week.
The City urges residents and property owners to help pedestrians by clearing sidewalks of snow and ice. City code requires that all property owners/occupants clear snow and ice from the public sidewalk that abuts their property within 24 hours of the end of a snow or ice storm.
Failure to do so may result in a notice of violation. After receiving a notice of violation, the property owner/occupant has 48 hours to remove snow and ice from the public sidewalk that abuts their property. If the sidewalk is not cleared, City crews may clear the area and bill the owner/occupant on an overtime basis for the work done. Approximately 6,500 notices have been issued to property owners/occupants. No City crews have been used for sidewalk snow and ice removal violations at this time.
For more information, call the City’s snow hotline at 548-6257.
