City Offers Free Salt/Sand Mix to Alexandria Residents
The City of Alexandria is offering free salt/sand mix to Alexandria residents who cannot locate or purchase salt to treat their sidewalks to clear them of snow and ice.
The salt/sand mix will be available in the parking lot of the City’s Recycling Center, located at 3550 Wheeler Avenue, starting at 2 p.m. today through Monday. Residents can gather the mix day or night. It is self-service and residents must bring their own containers and shovels to gather the mix.
The City urges residents and property owners to help pedestrians by clearing sidewalks of snow and ice. City code requires that all property owners/occupants clear snow and ice from the public sidewalk that abuts their property within 24 hours of the end of a snow or ice storm. Failure to do so may result in a notice of violation. After receiving a notice of violation, the property owner/occupant has 48 hours to remove snow and ice from the public sidewalk that abuts their property. If the sidewalk is not cleared, City crews may clear the area and bill the owner/occupant on an overtime basis for the work done.
For more information, call the City’s Snow Hotline at 838-6257.
