Alexandria Selected As One of the "Best Cities for Women" in America
The City of Alexandria has been selected as one of the "Best Cities for Women Today and Tomorrow" in the February 2000 edition of the Ladies’ Home Journal.

Described as "Cozy Yet Cosmopolitan," Alexandria was the only jurisdiction to receive a perfect score for quality of life in the magazine’s listing of top 10 cities nationwide.

"I think that this survey confirms what we’ve already known --- that Alexandria has an outstanding quality of life for both women and men," said Alexandria City Manager Vola Lawson. "I was very pleased that the survey projects that Alexandria women in the next 20 years will have the highest per capita income in the country."

Survey authors used the following criteria: low crime rate, quality of life, good public schools, well-paying and plentiful jobs, dependable health and child care and a significant number of women in local government. Overall, the City ranked ninth in the magazine’s analysis of 200 cities.

Last year, Business Development Outlook magazine ranked the City of Alexandria as the fifth best city in the country to do business.

"Considering Alexandria’s philosophy of citizen involvement and the public service commitment of its elected leaders, this ranking is no surprise," said Alexandria Mayor Kerry J. Donley. "We are truly committed to making sure that Alexandria is a diverse and caring community that meets the needs of all of its citizens."
