City of Alexandria Declares Victory Over Y2K
The City of Alexandria has experienced no problems related to Y2K. All of the City’s computer systems are continuing to function normally and the City’s efforts to ensure that these systems operate properly have succeeded.
"I am proud to say that we have had no reported incidents and Alexandrians have welcomed the new year in a responsible and celebratory manner," said Alexandria Mayor Kerry J. Donley. "Our First Night celebration was a rousing success and our community has come together to welcome in the new century."
Approximately 5,000 people attended First Night Alexandria, a non-alcoholic New Year’s Eve Celebration of the Arts that began at 6 p.m. Friday and ended with a midnight countdown and fireworks display on the lawn in front of the Masonic Memorial.
In preparation for the new year and possible Y2K complications, City officials opened the Emergency Operations Center at 8 a.m. Friday and the center will remain open until 3 a.m. Saturday, January 1.
"I am extremely proud of the dedicated public servants who staffed our command center and who worked throughout the City to ensure that Alexandria survived Y2K," Donley said.
While the City has experienced no reported problems related to Y2K, officials are continuing to monitor activities.
