Alexandria Police Investigate a Fatal Traffic Accident

The Alexandria Police Department is investigating a fatal traffic accident which occurred early today in the 2800 block of Duke Street. At approximately 12:09 a.m., police and medics responded to area of Roth and Duke streets for a two-vehicle accident which resulted in the death of an Alexandria man.

Preliminary investigation indicates that Moises Rodriguez Berrios, a 54-year-old male City resident, was driving a 1984 Honda Civic the wrong way in the eastbound lanes of Duke Street when he struck the second vehicle. That vehicle, a 1991 Mercury Sable, contained the driver, a 17-year-old female resident of Fairfax County, and one passenger, a 20-year-old male resident of Fairfax County.

All victims were transported by ambulance to Alexandria Hospital. Mr. Berrios was pronounced dead at 12:50 a.m. The other victims suffered minor injuries and are expected to be released later today.

According to witnesses, Mr. Berrios had been traveling east on Duke Street and then made a U-turn at West Taylor Run Parkway. However, instead of turning into the westbound lanes, the driver turned into the eastbound lanes and continued traveling against traffic until the accident occurred.

The Accident Reconstruction Team responded to the scene and closed the road while officers conducted the investigation. No charges have been filed in this case pending completion of the investigation and determination of the cause of the accident.
