Alexandria Police Join Child Safety Seat Partnership;
Alexandria CARES Hosts Free Car Seat Inspection, Offers Bilingual Services

The Alexandria Police Department, in conjunction with the Alexandria Pilot Club, the Alexandria Jaycees and the Alexandria Fire Department, announces the formation of a new community service organization -- Alexandria CARES -- dedicated to protecting the City's littlest passengers. Alexandria CARES (Child Automobile Restraint Education Services) combines trained police, fire and rescue personnel and volunteers to help families in Alexandria select and correctly install car safety seats for infants or toddlers and boosters for older children.

Next weekend, members of Alexandria CARES will be conducting a free child safety seat checkpoint in Arlandria. The checkpoint will be held on Saturday, October 9, between 10 a.m. and 3 p.m., at 221 West Glebe Road (in the parking lot of the former Safeway store). Child safety seats will be evaluated and correctly installed, and families whose seats are unsafe may buy replacements at a reduced cost from Alexandria CARES.

This event is believed to be the first of its kind in Northern Virginia to target assistance to the Spanish-speaking community. Bilingual volunteers and safety personnel will be on hand during the free checkpoint, and printed instructions and other literature will be available in Spanish.

For more information, please call Officer Mark Bergin, the Alexandria Police Department's child seat safety coordinator, at (703) 838-4763, extension 4.
